#

3D Cyber Puck allows you to do just that in its 3D first person view perspective on the game of air hockey.

3-Demon is probably the strangest Pac-Man game you’ll ever play. It is played in a first-person perspective, that is, in ’3D’

A

A somewhat annoying game where the object is to shoot down enemy paratroopers as they drop from planes.

Action Supercross (it’s now called ‘Elasto Mania’ in more recent Windows versions) is a motorbike simulation game that lets you drive your motorbike around a bunch of fun levels

  • Aldo 3

Part 3 of the Aldo series of games. All of the Aldo games play similarly to the classic Donkey Kong games from Nintendo.

Aldo bears a striking resemblence to Mario in this EGA ladder-climbing and jumping game that looks suspiciously similar to the original Donkey Kong game.

If you like the old-style 1st person hack’n'slash type, you might want to try this one.

After selecting an animal, you proceed through the different maps capturing prey and avoiding predators.

If you enjoy old-school ASCII games you’ll probably find ANSiDude pretty cool. It’s kind of like the classic Kroz series, except with more story elements and an inventory system.

The task is to keep an ant running through tunnels as long as possible. You can rotate the tunnel pieces to try to keep him going.

Ariva is a game that is rather difficult to describe. The object is to maneuver to the exit, avoiding the various obstructions on each randomly generated level.

Aro is a fairly basic sidescrolling/jumping game. You play as a red guy. The object is to jump your way to the end of the level.

B

In this game you play a squirrel named Skunny , and are on a quest to ‘save your girl’.

Balloons is a quick game of logic between two players or one player and the computer.

A fairly basic Arkanoid clone. One difference is that the playing field is bigger than one screen, so the screen scrolls as you move. It

An Arkanoid clone with a twist: Here you must guard your ‘castle’ from the bouncing ball instead of trying to destroy it.

The object of Atlantis is to conquer all eight islands which make up the atoll called ‘Atlantis’. You play the army called the Olympians.

Students can practice their addition skills by answering simple addition problems while racing against a snail, bomb or by gradually building a castle as they answer questions.

Your goal is to assist the enchanted the objects in Beast’s castle so that Belle can fall in love with him at the ball.

BipBop 2 it a ball & paddle game … it’s a bit different though, kind of hard to describe.

The object here is to collect all of the gems on each of the many levels by pushing blocks out of the way and avoiding other obstacles.

Basically it uses the Wolfenstein engine with some modifications, the best of which is a map so you’re not lost throughout the entire game.

In Block Man II, the object is to direct your block-carrying character around the various puzzle rooms using your mouse, stacking and jumping on the blocks until you’re able to reach the exit.

This action game involves flying a plane up the screen, shooting down other planes and bombing ground targets.

This is a Bomberman style game that, not too surprisingly, uses bombs and bugs!

In the game, all of the other video game villians have become trapped in jewelstones; the gameplay consists of picking up jewels of various colors and matching them up to eliminate them from the playing field, freeing the baddies.

Bouncing Babies is something of a classic PC game. Not necessarily because it’s fun to play, more just because it’s old.

It IS fun to play … however, it’s easy to miss the ‘ball’ (fireball?) because of the 3D perspective.

This is a game where you match blocks together to clear them from the playing field. It’s an interesting concept, and lots of puzzles are included.

C

It’s still a pretty cool game. The only thing it lacks is a save feature … which means you’ll just spend hours at a time trying to finish it.

Captain Eric is a vaguely Gauntlet-like game that involves avoiding or shooting enemies (‘aliens’), collecting power ups, and finding the exit through various mazes.

This shareware game has an interface that is very professionally done and rivals the commercial games of its time.

This game could have served as the inspiration for the newer 3D game Blood, so similar are the styles.

The game is sort of like a Pong type game mixed in with a baseball type theme. Sounds weird? Well, it is … but it’s fun to play, despite its simple premise.

One of the earliest (and most famous) attempts to modernise the classic Pacman game

An excellent conversion of the old arcade classic. It features great graphics, sweet SB sound and lots of other nice, professional touches

Charlie II is the sequel to Wiering Software’s ‘Charlie the Duck’. As such, it’s similar to the original game.

A very fun Pacman type game that expands on the original Pacman idea by adding different characters to play, as well as having varied, large levels and ghosts with individual personalities that talk to you between levels.

It plays well enough and has some interesting graphic/gameplay elements it just seems quite unprofessional at times.

A relaxing sidescroller where the emphasis is on collecting items and making tricky jumps, as well as solving simple puzzles.

Full title of this game is ‘Commander Keen: Invasion of the Vorticons’. I thought that this game was SO amazing when I first played it (many years ago), and it’s still quite fun now.

The Keen sequel is even better than the original!

Another great Commander Keen game! This is what’s known as the ‘lost’ episode since not as many people have played it.

Corncob 3D was one of the first and only shareware ’3D’ flight simulation games available.

One of Apogee’s great EGA sidescrollers, this one seems quite similar to Commander Keen. Cosmo has some added abilities, however, like using his suction-cupped hands to grab onto walls to climb.

Crusher Castle is sort of like an epic puzzle game. Each screen is randomly generated, and made up of blocks, ghosts and powerup items.

A somewhat average EGA side scroller created by Apogee right around the same time as the first Keen game was released

CyberBox is a game where you push around boxes to try to get to the exit. Despite it’s somewhat lacking graphics, it is innovative because of the many different types of boxes and the many different puzzle areas.

One of many Arkanoid clones, this one is fairly average. It is a bit more challenging than most Arkanoid games, however, because the ball moves very quickly and since the blocks are close to the bottom of the screen, you have little time to react.

This is a clone of the Tron light-cycle style game where the object is to make your opponent(s) crash into your tail as you move around the playing field.

D

Similar to the classic game Gauntlet this game features large dungeons that are explored from an overhead perspective.

This simple platform game contains some interesting concepts, such as the ability to have and use different magic powers and special items at the same time.

Top-down racing games are sort of a sub-genre of the larger racing genre, and Death Rally is a good example of how to do things right.

DentureMan is a strange clone/reworking of the classic Pacman dot-eating game. The playing field scrolls as you proceed to eat all of the dots and avoid the … uh, things.

DIAMAZE is a simple but sublimely relaxing game where the goal is to collect as many diamonds in a mine before your lamp runs out.

Diamond Dash borrows heavily from the classic Lode Runner game. It involves ladders, getting chased by baddies, collecting diamonds and using your ‘proton accelerator’ to blast holes in the floor to trap them.

The object is to guide your bouncing ball around the levels, changing your active color by touching key blocks, and breaking blocks that are the same color as the last ‘key block’ you touched

DOOM has been one of the most played computer games of the past few years.

Simply put, it’s a DOS version of the Windows Minesweeper game. Here the game is played in text mode, unlike the popular Windows version, and there aren’t many options to set.

This is a version of a popular game that people often play with a pen and paper.

DoubleSpyGuy, due to its nature as a text-mode sidescrolling jumping game, features limited graphics, sounds, and gameplay.

Not really a game, more of a musical toy … Drum Blaster is a virtual drum kit, where you can make simple songs by hitting different keys on your keyboard.

Ducks borrows many aspects from Lemmings, but I find it even more enjoyable to play, because unlike Lemmings (where the little green-haired freaks move at their own pace), here YOU decide when/where they move.

The Three Duke Nukems some of the best DOS games about.

Dungeon Crawl is a Roguelike game in the spirit of Rogue, Nethack, ADOM and many others.

Dungeons of Death is a first-person perspective role playing game, similar to classics like Dungeon Hack or Eye of the Beholder.

Dungeons of Grimlor is a mild action/adventure hybrid game where the object is to ‘Find the Evil Dragon Grimlor and retrieve the GEM of Souls!’

Dungeon Thief is essentially a simple ASCII-based maze game. Only a small portion of the maze is revealed at a time, and you must avoid the various baddies and find your way to the exit while collecting treasure.

E

A pretty good conversion of the classic game ‘Asteroids’. You won’t find any bells & whistles here, but it does present solid gameplay and smooth flowing graphics.

EGA Trek is based heavily on very early computer space simulation games.

Breakout spawned several clones, the most well known of which is probably Arkanoid, which itself spawned many clones. EGAWalls is one of several of those clones

It features a RoboCop-like character which you must try to navigate through the levels.

The object is to destroy your opponent by setting your gun location & velocity. The main difference here is that your shots are affected by the gravitational pull of planets in space so you must carefully plan your shots accordingly.

A neat little EGA platform game. It looks and plays sort of like an early Apogee game. It’s enjoyable, as long as you turn the extremely annoying PC speaker sound effects off.

Meaning you don’t get to bat, play the outfield, etc. Instead you play the role of manager and try to make the best decisions to help your team win games. It’s unfortunate that the game looks so good and the graphics and animations are so smooth, yet you can’t actually PLAY baseball

My favourite computer pinball games! The shareware version only contains one table, but it’s really cool. Great graphics, smooth scrolling, SB sounds, and ‘good enough’ physics

A more laid-back shooting game, Evasive Manoeuvres has you in control of your space ship, plowing through various high-tech themed levels, shooting and dropping bombs on various obstacles.

F

This is definitely a unique puzzle game. In it you play a fairy godmother who must collect magic coins on each board while avoiding killer crabs.

An interesting puzzle game with many different levels, despite the lack of great graphics and sound effects.

You throw ice balls at enemies to freeze them, and then run into them to make ‘em shatter.

Fire Fighter is an interesting ASCII-based strategy game which is not nearly as long and drawn-out as most strategy games. An entire game/scenario can last only a minute or two.

Flatworm II is a Nibbles/Snake type game which attempts to spice up the action with the addition of numerous power ups and credits you can earn to buy more power ups.

A bit of a weird sidescrolling game. It’s graphics, action, and control are all mostly average, but it does feature an adventure-like inventory system.

An innovative puzzle game where you attempt to match a pattern of balls that is shown on the right side of the screen.

It has no educational value but it seems that kids could potentially play with and enjoy for quite awhile.

This miniature golf game is quite fun to play, and it’s obvious that a lot of time and effort was poured into the game’s presentation and overall look.

G

This game may not be very complicated but it IS fun to play. The game was the first attempt by Cygnus Software

My first thought when playing this game was ‘Alright! It looks like Duke Nukem!’. GateWorld has undoubtedly been largely influenced by the original sidescrolling Duke Nukem games, which is not a bad thing

It sorta looks and plays like the original Zelda for the NES. I say sorta because it’s very simplistic in nature,

Gobman is one of many Pacman clones that is available on the DOS platform. Gobman features many different game board layouts

A mostly average Arkanoid clone. It has fairly good graphics, but the general lack of powerup items make the game less exciting than it could have been.

H

If you enjoy pushing-puzzle games, you will probably enjoy Heartlight. It is indeed light-hearted puzzle fare from Epic Megagames

This game is odd. The premise is that you have a limited amount of time (30 minutes) to reach the control room of the nuclear reactor.

Hera is an old-school overhead RPG that is very similar to the original Ultima games. Using a simple system of keyboard commands you control your character, you are on some kind of quest … probably involving the Sword of Rhin.

  • Heretic (Coming Soon)

Based on the DOOM engine, Heretic was only mildly popular on its release because there were so many copycat 3D-shooting games released around the same time.

Hero’s Heart is a traditional pushing, block moving puzzle game. The object varies from level to level, but usually consists of collecting all of the hearts on the level and getting to the green exit.

  • Hocus Pocus (Coming Soon)

Similar to Clyde’s Revenge but this one has better graphics, plus it’s more exciting, because there are enemies to kill!

This isn’t really a game … and it isn’t really a horoscope program, either. It simply predicts ridiculous events that ‘will’ happen based on your astrological sign.

Hubie is not a well known game, but it probably should be. The game involves action, platforming and puzzle elements.

These are fun! Done in the style of those classic Sierra adventures, these feature EGA graphics and annoying PC speaker effects (which, thankfully, can be easily turned off). They’re all fun to play, though, especially if you enjoy graphic adventure games.

This is a 3D shooter you’ve probably never played before. It uses an engine similar to the one used by early 3D games like Wolfenstein 3D or Ken’s Layrinth

I

Insanity is an ASCII-based (ie text-mode) maze game, where you must find your way through the maze while collecting items, avoiding enemies, picking up clues, and doing lots of other stuff. Its a weird little game but if you’re into old DOS games this is a unique and interesting one to play.

A unique and interesting ASCII text-mode game where the object is to destroy all of the missle-launchers on each island.

In this strategy style game your goal is to take over the world! It’s similar to the classic game Risk, but adds some new elements like natural disasters.

J

  • Jaspers Journeys

You play an elf-like creature, and you jump around, collect items, etc. It’s very well done.

  • Jazz Jack rabbit
  • Jazz Jack rabbit II

A pretty cool platform game that tries to borrow from Sonic the Hedgehog, with mixed results. It actually plays a bit slower than Sonic, but includes more shoot’em’up action.

  • Jelly fish

JellyFish is a simplistic arcade game that seems like it could have been released for the Atari 2600 back in day.

  • Jill of the Jungle

This is the first game released by Epic after the infamous ZZT series.

K

  • KerBoom

I’ve only played the old Kaboom game briefly (emulated, of course) it’s hard to say how faithful this version is.

  • Kilo blaster

If you’re a fan of Galaxian (or its sequel Galaga) you may want to check out Kiloblaster. This simple EGA shooter seems heavily influenced by those classic arcade games.

  • Koolah

I think this game is supposed to be relaxing … but to me, IT ISN’T!!! Like those wooden puzzles, you have to roll your ball around the maps to the exit, trying to avoid the holes.

  • KrisKross

KrisKros is just such a word game, and has NO relation to the awful rap duo from the 90′s.

  • Krypton Egg

Like Arkanoid … except better! This Arkanoid ‘clone’ isn’t really a clone at all. It features great graphics, cool sounds, and varied level design. The best part, however, are the cool powerups that drop down. In some levels, the screen gets really crazy with all of the balls and powerups and enemies flying around.

L

  • Labyrinth of Zeux

It’s a sidescrolling ASCII-style game with edited characters. Controls are a bit hit-and-miss, but it includes some text-mode animation and a large variety of objects and levels.

  • Laser Light

Laser Light is a unique puzzle game where the object is to use various mirrors and other objects to guide a laser to hit a target.

  • Last Half of Darkness

This graphical horror adventure game predates slightly more modern efforts like Phantasmagoria.

  • Loader Larry

. The goal is simply to get Larry to the exit of the room by carrying and pushing boxes around.

  • Lost Mind of Dr.Brain

This game is the third in the Dr. Brain series. Solve logic, math, and other puzzling conundrums designed to stress your brain.

M

  • Mario Brothers VGA

1990 Mario Brothers rendered with VGA. That’s all you need to know.

  • Math Rescue

That was always the more popular variant, but Math Rescue is essentially the same concept – evade enemies, complete levels, and learn something

  • Megatron VGA

Do you still have a modem? No? Why in heaven’s name not? If you did, you could play one of the oldest-school modem multiplayer games the old-school modem multiplayer way.

  • Mice Men

Run your mice to the other side of the board.

  • Mine Bombers

Mine Bombers is a not too distant relative of Bomberman, apart from the bigger levels and the Counterstrike-esque addition of a pre-match equipment store.

  • Mission Maze

Go on missions. In mazes. Get items. Blow stuff up with the by now almost obligatory explosives.

  • Monster Bash

Another Apogee sidescroller. Sure, it’s not up to the lofty standards of some of its other offerings, especially given it’s not in VGA, it’s still worth a loot.

  • Moraffs Dungeons of the Unforgiven

One of the old school RPG’s, this one basically just sets you out with the weapon of you choice to go and beat stuff into submission

  • Mystic Towers

You’re Baron Baldric, you’ve been asked to clear the Towers of Lazarine of monsters.

  • Myth Master

Ah, Sierra. Remember those old, old days? Well, you can kind of relive the past with MythMaster.

N

  • Night Raid

Similar to AckAck but with a bit more polish. From the creators of the excellent Hexxagon game comes this one

  • NR Maze

NRMaze is a variant of the classic Windows puzzle game Minesweeper. The twist is that you cannot start the puzzle just anywhere.

  • Number Munchers

Help your kids learn multiplication, factions, inequality, and other mathematical concepts with this learning game.

A bunch of terrorists have taken control of all 40 floors of the U.N. building. You are part of a crack anti-terrorist assault team.

  • Outrun

A race against time. The goal is to make it through five stages. You have to finish each stage in the allocated time to move on, but leftover time is added to the next stage.

  • Over kill

Epic’s first attempt at a vertical scroller. Follows the norm for this type of game, one ship versus wave after wave of alien attackers.

  • Oxyd

Oxyd is a game about making matches. You are a marble and you have to bump into blocks to match them. Like the game ‘Memory’, if you check the color of a box and it is not the same as the one already open, they both close.

P

  • Pac bar

A neat variant of the classic Pac-Man game. This version includes a couple of new gameplay elements, big levels and good EGA graphics.

  • Pack rat

A rather basic jumping game. Here you play the role of a rat who must run and jump through various scenes collecting items.

  • Paganitzu

A better than average ‘pushing’ puzzle. It was actually supposed to be a semi-sequel to the Apogee classic ‘Pharoah’s Tomb’, however the gameplay is totally different.

  • Para trooper

This action game is somewhat similar to Missile Command, but with its own unique feel. This game was mostly popular on non-PC computers.

  • Pea Shootin Pete

If you’ve played Spitwad Willy, you’ve played Pea Shootin’ Pete.

  • Peter Box

Peter-Box (aka PeterBox or Peter Box) is a block-pushing game, similar to Sokoban or Boxxle.

An almost perfect recreation of Pong, with everything that that entails.

  • Plix

Plix is another unique puzzle game from Soleau Software. In this game the object is to push around sliding blocks on a grid to match them up with their negative images.

  • Plunder Mine

Action-puzzle games are faily rare, but this one probably could qualify as both. The goal is to collect as much gold and silver as possible before the other players and avoiding blowing yourself up or getting blown up by the other players.

Q

First in the legendary series, fight the Strogg menace with guns and… more guns. In various shades of brown.

  • Quato

A little wordgame, where you try and get as many words as possible from all the letters in a 5×5 grid.

R

  • Rollin

  • Rotaktix

A Tetris-inspired game, where you drop entire rows of blocks at a time, matching them to make ‘em disappear for good.

  • Roxx

An asteroid clone! Not much more to it than that.

S

  • Sam Spade

An asteroid clone! Not much more to it than that.

  • Save our Pizzas

You’re Skunny the squirrel, trying to retrieve an ancient pizza recipe from the Evil Chef of Cadiz. In… sidescroller action.

Ah, the good old days of sitting around in school and playing this Worms-like tank-fighting game turn by turn with all my mates.

  • Scubamans Quest

Collect treasure, avoid monsters, all underwater.

Use a chopper or a tank to complete missions and blow stuff up from a top-down perspective.

Off-colour humour and very nearly 3D shooting? It must be from 3D Realms.

  • Shooting Gallery

It’s… it’s a shooting gallery. You… shoot things. Beat your high score when you shoot things. Shoot things.

  • Sint Nicholaas

A maze/shooting game where you run around, looking for keys and treasure, and try to get to the exit. Avoid the snarfs.

  • Space war

The FIRST videogame. THE VERY FIRST GAME. Well, a copy of the first game, since the first game took a university supercomputer to run, but still. THE FIRST GAME EVER.

  • Spitwad Willy

You’re Willy. Shoot spitwads at bouncing balls, that split into two every time you hit them, and try to avoid being crushed!

  • Techno venture

  • Terminal Velocity

It takes a little while to get used to, but this flying shooting game can be really fun to play.

  • Terror in Christmas Town

Ever felt the need to rescue a kidnapped elf who has been captured by a evil polar bear? No, me neither. Yet, in Wolfenstein-like 3D, that’s exactly the premise of this game. Although you use heavy weaponry (shotguns and so on) this is not a gory game.

  • The Game with No Name

This is a sort-of sidescrolling game where you use mostly the left and right arrow keys only to play.

  • The Jelly Bean Factory

The Jelly Bean Factory is a superb Columns clone. Columns of three jelly beans fall from the ceiling, and their order can be rotated. Get three or more of the same color jelly bean, horizontally, vertically or diagonally, and they disappear.

  • The Unreal World

This one is very indepth, and includes many different features that make it involving to play, such as the huge variety of classes, locations, seasons, etc.

  • The Walls of Bratock

Fantasy storyline, block graphics, and turn-based battles are the order of the day here. There are some annoying parts, like the overly lengthy introduction, and the 30-second ‘shareware reminder’ screen but the game itself plays decently enough for fans of hardcore old-school PC RPGs.

  • Wacky Wheels

Eight wacky animals ride around in go-karts. I want to be the Panda so I can ‘bamboozle’ people… geddit?

  • Wilf2

It’s like PACMAN on steroids! Or at least on some kind of drug. Mazes yes, but heaps of extra stuff as well. Jam and cheesie biscuits for everyone!

  • Willy the Worm

The XT classic. Bounce around a Donkey Kong-like level avoiding things and eating other things in glorious monochrome.

Well it’s Nazis in pseudo-3D and you shoot them

  • Word max

Like those word puzzles in the newspaper where you have to max lots of words from a master word, except this is on your PC. And it’s 1994 so your fashion sense sucks.

  • Word Rescue

It’s completely awesome! Rescue words by like jumping around and spelling stuff. At last a proper excuse to learn to read!

  • Wordtrix

Think The Matrix but with a learning literacy flavour. Then think again coz this basic puzzler ain’t nothing like the Matrix.

Forget Ultima and other flashy stuff like that: this is where essential awkward-perspective RPG gaming is at. Simple and maybe even addictive…

  • Xyphr

It’s a kind of forced-perspective shooter that doesn’t work very well.

  • Zip man 3

What motivates a team to make a generic side-scroller with no real reason to exist? Ponder these questions as you play!

  • Zong

A man named Robert J Sundling. And he decided of all the things he could use his mind to create… yet another ball and paddle game for PC was the thing for him.
